![]() ![]() Horror and revenge tales are emphatically not my thing, but for someone who isn’t a yellow-bellied chicken with a joy fetish, I could see this being a good read. It’s reminiscent of 70s and 80s YA– lots of long character studies, a little messy around the edges, with genuinely creepy elements that pop up seemingly out of nowhere and change everything. This is a coming-of-age story with some heavy horror elements, written in a style you don’t often see now. ![]() ![]() A few summer days spent in the woods with their hoodoo-practicing aunt Teddy turn into revelation, tragedy, and bloody revenge, and the girls’ lives lead in very different directions when all is said and done. It’s like if Lovecraft Country was about pre-teen girls.Īll comparisons aside, this is a story of three sisters – PeeWee, Ann and Betty – in segregated Louisiana. It reminds me of the far-out fests that always reviewing. It’s like if Mildred D Taylor’s classic Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry was a supernatural horror. While I was reading, tendrils of the story dug their way into my brain and wrapped themselves around totally unrelated thoughts, creating some pretty weird comparisons. Something about Rootwork feels like it’s from another era. (Full disclosure: Tracy and I were in the same master class at Under The Volcano this January, and she graciously sent me an ARC of this book in exchange for a fair review.) She lays out all the Greek gods, mirrors them to their cut-and-paste Roman counterparts, and goes over all the names and relationships. Hamilton is first and foremost a scholar, and her Mythology reminds me more of the college texts I read once upon a time, where the heroes and their often grisly, racy, and generally inappropriate journeys were overwhelmed by the sheer level of J-STOR-esque quibbles that destroyed the good story vibe and made it just intellectual enough to be unpleasant. Worse yet, I found myself bored and drifting when I listened to it. Maybe it’s just because I’ve since been exposed to more entertaining (albeit inaccurate) depictions of dramatized mythology. This book was in my mom’s growing collection, and I would always look at it as a child and say “that, that I HAVE to read someday.” In grade school I adored anything to do with Greek mythology, despite the fact that what I read was inevitably watered down and sanitized for children.Īfter 20+ years (ok, going on 30+, but whatever) I finally got to follow-through on my childhood promise when I snatched Hamilton’s now famous Mythology from an Audible sale. I remember Edit Hamilton’s Mythologywith its depiction of a warrior riding a Pegasus from my childhood. ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s easier to ignore cause of her age, but her storyline just didn’t hold any interest for me much. She goes to her mother’s old home hoping to find her and is focused on starting a new family with the other residents. Zoey ran from her father and stepmother’s home because there was no love for her there. I guess you could say this book is about connections. The book also follows several ghosts as well as Lizbeth’s estranged son Oliver. ![]() The home she moves into also includes some strange and compelling residents such as Charlotte (a henna artist with a past she is running from) Mac (a chef who is still grieving someone who can’t quite let go of) Lizbeth (newly dead and still angry) Lucy (sister to Lizbeth who is afraid to leave her home) and Frasier (seems to be the equivalent of a super to the building). “Other Birds” follows Zoey Hennessey who finally before she starts college, has moved to Mallow Island, South Carolina, to live in her deceased mother’s condo. And I think that Allen tried to force-fit a few things that just didn’t work. And I think that due to that I wasn’t able to settle with any of the characters at all. Maybe because the grief in these pages just crowded out everything else. Instead this book seems to be missing that. Somehow in her other books she’s always been able to transport me to a fictional town where it seemed magic leaked around the edges. I absolutely love her older books and this one just didn’t do it for me. I have been waiting on a new Sarah Addison Allen book for years. ![]() ![]() ![]() tPr tl3ld tl ? e FT yesterday that pr j 1Iiaf y aluminium ingot -.nd rc- along the lines or the Chan- tne wage restraint negotiations.
